Mickoski: Diaspora vote to be considered alongside single electoral district

Skopje, 14 January 2026 (MIA) — Potential amendments to the Electoral Code discussed during the leaders meeting held earlier Wednesday include introducing a single electoral district and granting diaspora community members a right to vote in the country's parliamentary elections, Prime Minister and VMRO-DPMNE president Hristijan Mickoski told a press conference following the meeting he had initiated to discuss several pertinent issues with fellow party leaders.

Responding to a reporter's question on the proposal put forth by the government coalition partner Worth It that diaspora members get more rights and opportunities to vote in the country's elections, Mickoski said the country should form a single electoral district first.

"Before we get to the diaspora voting method, we need to define two things. First, will we have a single electoral district? Because then all the votes would merge into one pool, be they residents' or diaspora members' votes," the prime minister said.

Mickoski also noted that some countries did not allow voting outside of diplomatic and consular missions.

"There are countries that allow organizing voting only in diplomatic and consular missions. There are also those that do not allow it at all. This is a real obstacle. We agreed we need to be creative and continue to think and talk about this, but at this point it should be at the level of parliamentary group whips", the PM said. mr/
