EU prosecutors probe commission real estate sales worth €900 million

Brussels, 12 February 2026 (dpa/MIA) — EU prosecutors are investigating the European Commission over the sale of buildings to the Belgian government, the commission said Thursday.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that it was collecting evidence in an ongoing investigation.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed that raids have been carried out at the commission.

According to a 2024 press release, 23 buildings previously owned by the commission were sold to the Belgian state for an amount of €900 million ($1.07 billion).

The commission will fully cooperate with authorities, "providing any information and assistance needed to ensure a thorough and independent investigation into this matter," a spokesman said.

"As far as the European Commission is concerned, the sale of the buildings followed established procedures and protocols, and we are confident that the process was conducted in a compliant manner," the spokesman added.

Belgium's Federal Holding and Investment Company SFPIM, with which the commission struck the 2024 sales deal, confirmed that its premises were searched as part of an ongoing investigation.

"The company is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities and providing them with the required information, in strict compliance with the law," SFPIM said in a statement.
