Civilian plane intercepted near Trump's Florida estate

Washington, 30 March 2026 (dpa/MIA) - A civilian aircraft entered the temporary no-fly zone around US President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and was intercepted by F-16 fighter jets, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Sunday.

The jets fired flares to attract the pilot's attention or communicate with the aircraft, before safely escorting it out of the restricted airspace, NORAD said on X. The flares burn completely and posed no risk to people on the ground, it added.

The military did not disclose how many jets were involved or the type of civilian aircraft.

Mar-a-Lago, located in Palm Beach in south-east Florida, is regularly surrounded by a temporary flight restriction when the president is on-site. Trump spends many weekends at the club, particularly in winter, and was in Florida this past weekend.
