Mickoski: Energy law to be amended to prevent electricity price hike

Skopje, 20 June 2024 (MIA) – A group of MPs from the VMRO-DPMNE-led “Your Macedonia” coalition submitted Thursday in Parliament a bill amending the law on energy in a fast-tracked procedure aimed at preventing the household electricity price from rising, PM-designate and VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski announced at a news conference.

Under the bill, he said, the standard of the citizens will be protected and drastic increase in the energy price will not be allowed.

The amendments ensure that the households in the first and second group will not receive higher energy bills and that consumers in the third and fourth group will not see significant increase, which would rise up to 1%-2%.

According to the bill, Mickoski said, a 5-percent rise of the electricity price will be prevented, which was expected as of July 1 according to a recent decision of the caretaker government.

Speaking at the news conference, Mickoski said steps will be made in the next six months to reorganize the energy sector so as to lower the energy bills of households from 1 January 2025 until 30 June 2025.

“It would combat inflation, prices will start to drop. The citizens are our priority. The citizens did what it had to be done, now it is up to the VMRO-DPMNE government to do everything in the interest of the citizens,” the future prime minister concluded.
