Education minister: We need fewer law graduates, more science teachers

Skopje, 20 July 2024 (MIA) — Starting next year, higher education institutions will be enrolling students based on the needs of the labor market, Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska said in a Kanal 77 radio talk show, according to the Ministry of Education and Science in a press release.

The quotas will be determined based on Employment Agency data, Janevska said.

"This year we did not have time to intervene," she said, noting that she had to sign off on the student quotas for the 2024-25 academic year decided by her predecessors.

"But our analysis has started. Some quotas need to be reduced. For example, Macedonia does not need so many lawyers. It needs mathematics, physics, chemistry teachers. We will stimulate young people through scholarships to choose deficit occupations," Janevska said.

According to the release, the education minister was also considering introducing entrance exams for all higher education institutions.

Janevska also said the new government intended to increase the education budget from the current 0.3 percent of GDP to 1 percent of GDP. mr/
