Delegations lay flowers at monument of 1963 Skopje earthquake victims
Skopje, 26 July 2021 (MIA) – On the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the disastrous earthquake in Skopje, delegations, including that from President Stevo Pendarovski’s Office, laid on Monday flowers at the monument of earthquake victims at the Skopje-based Butel cemetery.
A government delegation led by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev also laid flowers at the memorial, as did delegations from the City of Skopje, led by mayor Petre Shilegov and the Council of the City of Skopje, made up of council members Branko Georgievski, Irena Popova and Bojan Ivanovikj.
Representatives of political parties, Skopje municipalities, Red Cross-Skopje, public enterprises, cultural and state institutions, associations, foreign delegations and other citizens, also paid on Monday their respect to the victims of the Skopje earthquake.
The Skopje earthquake leveled much of the city on this day in 1963, killing over 1.000 people and leaving 3.000 injured.
This year’s observances will follow strict protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
