Strasbourg, 19 October 2021 (MIA) – European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi on Tuesday presented the 2021 Enlargement Package, which includes progress reports for Western Balkan countries and Turkey, to the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affair (AFET) and called for opening of EU negotiations with Skopje and Tirana without delay, MIA’s Brussels correspondent reports. Commissioner Varhelyi echoed the same sentiment of the European Commission reports that the delay in official launch of accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia has had a negative impact on the EU’s credibility. He said the Commission has been working closely to unblock the impasse, stressing that the EU body has to deliver by the end of the year. According to the Commissioner, it is up to all EU member states to deliver and “North Macedonia has to deliver, which is a partner in this.” Mentioning that recently he has traveled to the two capitals, Varhelyi said he is still prepared to help and added that it might require more commitment. He said nothing can be done currently given the elections organized in both Bulgaria and North Macedonia, noting that the puzzle has to be solved. Commissioner Varhelyi reiterated the conclusions of the report on North Macedonia that it has demonstrated determination in reform implementation, including rule of law and fight against corruption and organized crime. “North Macedonia has shown its determination and made steady progress in implementing EU reforms, including in the areas of rule of law, fight against corruption and organised crime. The country needs to keep up this momentum. The fight against corruption needs to continue along with further efforts in the area of Public Administration Reform,” he said in his remarks in AFET.
