Helicopters to fight Pehchevo wildfire, Bulgaria also sends help
Pehchevo, 4 August 2021 (MIA) – Necessary measures have been taken and we’ve requested assistance from the Protection and Rescue Directorate. Two helicopters should arrive shortly to assist in extinguishing the wildfire, Pehchevo mayor Dragan Trenchovski said after a meeting of the Crisis HQ on Wednesday.
“The situation is serious, the fire has spread above the villages of Robovo and Umlena. It’s high up in the forest above the villages, but it’s spreading over a large portion of land. Firefighters from Berovo and Pehchevo are out in the field and we’re set to get air assistance with the arrival of two helicopters. Moreover, neighboring Bulgaria has also sent a team of 25 people to assist in firefighting efforts,” Trenchovski underlined.
If the wildfire continues to spread with the same speed, he added, two more helicopters will be dispatched to assist in extinguishing it, in addition to help from Slovenia.
“Helicopters should arrive in less than two hours and I hope that we’ll manage to localize the wildfire. Inaccessible terrain and wind make the situation worse. We have people in the field and expect assistance from the Army as well,” the Pehchevo mayor said.
