Murtezani-Waitz: A responsible approach needed for country’s shared European future

Brussels, 12 May 2025 (MIA) – Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani and Austrian MEP Thomas Waitz, the European Parliament’s rapporteur for North Macedonia, discussed on Monday key priorities in the EU accession process as the Reform Agenda, constitutional amendments, ongoing preparations for opening negotiating clusters, and the importance of cross-party and institutional consensus for successful reforms.
During the discussion, it was underscored, that the process of constitutional amendments, though complex, remains a necessary step on the country’s European path, one that requires "a responsible approach and unity around a shared vision for a European future.”

MEP Waitz reaffirmed both his personal and institutional commitment to supporting the country on its EU path, commending its constructive role in regional cooperation and participation in European initiatives. He also stressed that the country plays an important role as a stable partner of the European Union.
Murtezani expressed appreciation for the European Parliament’s ongoing support to the country and stressed the vital role of the MEPs, especially rapporteurs, in preserving the credibility of enlargement as a strategic tool for advancing the European integration of the Western Balkans.

He also underscored the Government’s commitment to accelerating reforms and fostering inclusive dialogue within the country to build consensus around the strategic objective of EU membership.
Murtezani and Waitz reiterated their shared commitment to maintaining close communication and coordinating efforts to advance the country’s EU accession process, based on mutual understanding, trust, and European solidarity.

Following their recent constructive meeting in Skopje, Minister Murtezani and MEP Thomas Waitz continued their dialogue today in Brussels, reaffirming their commitment to advancing parliamentary cooperation and aligning political efforts in support of the country’s European aspirations.
Minister Murtezani is paying a working visit to Brussels on Monday and Tuesday, for meetings with European Parliament, European Commission and Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST) officials.
