Spasovski: US visit in the spirit of advancing relations and strengthening cooperation

Skopje, 13 January 2024 (MIA) – Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski stated that the visit to the USA was in the spirit of advancing our relations and strengthening cooperation.

In an interview with Voice of America, Spasovski stated that talks with James O'Brien, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, and all other US officials, were focused on combating crime and corruption.

“This is something that is beneficial for the Macedonian society, Macedonian citizens; it was one of the commitments. I briefed Mr. O'Brien on the government's initiatives in this area, including the preparation of legal measures to address individuals listed on the US blacklist. This includes restrictions on their participation in public functions and involvement in public procurement tenders,” Spasovski said.

Interior Minister assessed that this is one of the significant visits and emphasized that the USA is our strategic partner.

"When discussing security matters, they truly serve as partners, contributing to the development and enhancement of security in North Macedonia. Their substantial support includes not only equipment but also human capacity, training, contacts, etc. The entire visit was in the spirit of advancing our relations, seeking to enhance cooperation. I must say that during meetings with officials from the US Department of Homeland Security, the Deputy Public Prosecutor, the Director of ICITAP, we had extensive discussions about our future collaboration and the direction we should take. Certainly, the priorities in the security sector are identical," Spasovski said.

In the discussions, it was also stressed that there is no alternative to the European perspective for the Republic of North Macedonia.

"Every step we take towards the EU should be firm, decisive, and bold. I informed Mr. O'Brien and other representatives about the progress in the fight against corruption, the measures we are implementing, and our efficiency in this matter. Additionally, their commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with us and help strengthen the capacities of institutions to address challenges was emphasized," Minister Spasovski said.
