Shtip marks 79th anniversary of deportation of Macedonian Jews
Shtip, 10 March 2022 (MIA) – Shtip on Thursday joined events commemorating the 79th anniversary of the deportation of Macedonian Jews to a Nazi death camp with President of the Jewish Community, Pepo Levi, Shtip Mayor Ivan Jordanov, US Ambassador Kate Byrnes and British Ambassador Rachell Galloway in attendance.
More than 7,000 Jews from the cities of Skopje, Bitola and Stip in March 1943 were transported to the Nazi's Treblinka death camp in German-occupied Poland.
“I’m grateful to Shtip and its citizens for never forgetting the day when their fellow citizens were deported,” said Levi before joining the other guests in marching to the memorial dedicated to the Shtip Jews.
Shtip Mayor Jordanov wished the 80th anniversary were to be held amid peace and unity in the world.
US Ambassador Byrnes said it is important people to learn from history, adding she was pleased for being invited to present her country at the event.
British Ambassador Galloway said that given what has been happening in the world, people mustn’t forget the holocaust in Europe and people must make sure it never happens again.
