Petrovska-Troccaz: North Macedonia belongs to European family, EU membership a security issue

Skopje, 17 November 2023 (MIA) - The security situation in the region, the need to intensify European integration processes to enhance stability and prosperity in the Western Balkan countries, and the development of Macedonian-French defence cooperation as strategic partners and allies within the Alliance were the key topics discussed during Friday's meeting between Defence Minister Slavjanka Petrovska and the newly appointed French special envoy for the Western Balkans, René Troccaz.

Within the framework of integrative processes in the region, according to the Ministry of Defence, Minister Petrovska emphasized that European integration should be seen as a security matter. This viewpoint gains significance, especially in light of the global security situation and attempts by third parties to exert influence on the countries in the region.

Hence, she added, it is of utmost importance for North Macedonia not to delay on its path to European integration.

“After joining NATO, our focus is on the country's integration into the European Union. It is crucial not to delay on the path to EU membership, particularly since the anticipated constitutional changes from North Macedonia only affirm the country as a democratic and multiethnic nation, with no impact on the national identity. On the contrary, incorporating Bulgarian along with other minorities into the Constitution dismisses the misguided idea that we are one people in two states. This affirms our national Macedonian identity. The detriment lies in postponing the process,” Petrovska noted.

French special envoy for the Western Balkans, René Troccaz, as stated in the press release, has concurred that the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU is not only a security matter but also conveyed the stance of her country that North Macedonia belongs to the European family, united by shared values, prosperity, and stability.

According to Troccaz, North Macedonia receives unwavering French support for its swift integration into the Union.
Within the framework of bilateral defence cooperation, Minister Petrovska emphasized that North Macedonia and France have advanced their collaboration to the level of a strategic partnership.

She also discussed the modernization and equipment process, emphasizing that one of the key systems, the air defense system, North Macedonia is procuring directly from France. This affirms the progress in French military technology and underscores North Macedonia's commitment to the rapid development of its armed forces.

“Troccaz stated that France highly values North Macedonia's role as an ally and a stabilizing factor in the region,” as stated in the Ministry of Defence press release.

French Ambassador to North Macedonia Cyrille Baumgartner and Mathieu Abgrall from the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of France also attended the meeting.
