President Siljanovska Davkova nominates Trajko Slaveski for National Bank governor

Skopje, 21 May 2025 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova has nominated Prof. Dr. Trajko Slaveski for the position of the new governor of the National Bank, the President’s Office said Wednesday evening.

Currently heading the Skopje City Council, Slaveski is a professor at the Faculty of Economics in Skopje and a former Finance Minister.

The President has forwarded her nomination to Parliament, which will vote to elect the new National Bank governor in a plenary session with a simple majority.

"In making the decision, the President was guided by expertise and competence, dignity and integrity, as well as the realistic possibility of appointing the candidate. We would like to emphasize that the selection was difficult, given the proven quality of all the candidates," the President’s Office stated.

In a prior media statement, Siljanovska Davkova announced that she would deliver the proposal today before her trip to Italy.

"While in office, you must put aside party influence and focus on professional challenges. By law, the role is incompatible with party membership. We had a great governor, Petar Goshev, who was a party leader, and that wasn’t an issue," the President said when asked whether she had compromised on the law since some candidates are linked to parties.

Professor Trajko Slaveski from Skopje’s Faculty of Economics was one of the three main candidates mentioned, along with the current governor Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska and former finance minister Zoran Stavreski.

Angelovska-Bezhoska’s term as governor ends on Thursday.

She took office on May 22, 2018.

Before her, Dimitar Bogov served as governor from 2011 to 2018, preceded by Petar Goshev (2004–2011), Ljube Trpeski (1997–2004), and Borko Stanoevski (1986–1997).
