Janevska: Building an education system that fulfills objectives of Smart Specialization Strategy

Skopje, 21 May 2025 (MIA) - Macedonia has a Smart Specialization Strategy that defines areas of potential for growth. The most important resource for realization of the defined objectives is the human capital and this is how we are shaping education - creating staff that is required in the economy's priority sectors, Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska told the Education World Forum taking place in London on Wednesday.

Minister Janevska said the Smart Specialization Strategy is focused on digital and green transition in the fields of smart agriculture and added value food, information and communication technologies, electrical-mechanical industry, sustainable materials and smart buildings, the Ministry of Education and Science said in a press release.

Janevska said the secondary vocational education in Macedonia is completely modernized, with modular curricula applied, well-trained teachers and involvement of companies in the process.

"Back in 2017, we introduced the model of dual education, i.e. learning by working, and it has been continually enlarging. Companies are involved in the development of practical skills among the youth. Seventy percent of the total number of high school students are currently enrolled in vocational schools," said Janevska and added there is room for enhancement of cooperation between universities and businesses.

The Education World Forum is the world’s largest annual gathering of education and skills ministers. The event provides excellent networking and peer learning opportunities for ministers from around the world to discuss the most pressing issues in the education space. This year's event explores a wide spectrum of critical issues surrounding the development of inclusive, responsive and resilient education systems that drive equitable and sustainable socio-economic growth.
