Toronto, 24 March 2025 (MIA) - Niagara Falls was lit up red and yellow on Sunday to honour the victims killed in the devastating Kochani nightclub fire a week ago, Canadian daily The Star reports.
On Sunday, from 9 pm to 9:25 pm, both the American and Canadian sides of Niagara Falls were illuminated with the red and yellow colours of the North Macedonia flag.
"The light show is to honour the victims and support those mourning the Macedonian nightclub tragedy," Chris Giles, with Niagara Parks, has told The Star.
The nightclub incident was "horrific," said Chris Paliare, a Macedonian lawyer living in Toronto whose family has been in Canada for more than 100 years.
"In a place like Macedonia, that is relatively small … it has an even more dramatic impact. A lot of people know each other," Paliare said.
Niagara Falls previously shone with the red and yellow colours of North Macedonia's flag in 2021, to celebrate the country’s 30th Independence Day.
"There’s a recognition in Canada of the long-standing contribution that Macedonians have made to Canada," Paliare said, adding that "it gives you an enormous sense of pride."
