Minister Saliu urges institutional solution for Romani language

Skopje, 5 November 2024 (MIA) - A Romani language department at the Ss.Cyril and Methodius University, cultural centers in Skopje and four other cities, grammars, primers and dictionaries in Romani language are some of the demands that Minister for integration and implementation of the Roma Inclusion Strategy 2022-2030, Shaban Saliu, delivered on World Day of Romani Language on Tuesday.

Minister Saliu told reporters that he expects a real institutional solution for the Romani language.

"What I expect from the Government is the publishing of 30,000 grammars and the same number of primers and dictionaries in Romani language, which we could distribute to every Roma family," said Saliu.

According to him, a Romani language department should be set up at the Skopje-based Ss.Cyril and Methodius University, along with the production of quality teachers and professors teaching Romani language in elementary and secondary schools, as well as incorporation of the language as mandatory in schools.

"The Romani language was first codified and standardized in 1990, it is recognized by the Council of Europe and the European Union," underlined Saliu.

UNESCO proclaimed 5 November the World Day of Romani Language in 2015.
