Brussels, 13 February 2024 (MIA) – First Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs in the caretaker Government, Bojan Marichikj, held a meeting on Tuesday with Belgian Foreign Minister, Hadja Lahbib, concurring that the common values and goals binding North Macedonia and Belgium together include readiness to deepen cooperation in various sectors, reforms of democratic principles, growth and development of member states together with Western Balkan candidate countries, as well as realizing the European Union enlargement.  

"Our mission is aimed at proactive engagement of North Macedonia in achieving the goal of full-fledged EU membership," said Marichikj.  

During the talks with Lahbib, whose country currently holds the presidency of the EU Council, Marichikj pointed out that North Macedonia's goal is to take a step closer to the Union with the support of the Belgian Presidency.

In addition to the Belgian Presidency's steadfast support, Deputy PM Marichikj stressed North Macedonia's decisive and unwavering commitment to the development and successful implementation of European integration.

The discussion also focused on finding ways to boost cooperation between North Macedonia and Belgium, with the aim of strengthening regional stability, economic prosperity and cultural exchange within the European framework.

Lahbib praised the country's progress in aligning with the European values ​​and standards, expressing Belgium's steadfast support for North Macedonia's European aspirations. Participants in the meeting highlighted the importance of solidarity and partnership in resolving the challenges and opportunities on the European path. 

Deputy PM Marichikj also extended gratitude, highlighting the importance of the Belgian Presidency as a time when key processes in the EU, important both for the country and for the region, will be taking place.

In addition, Marichikj met with Deputy Managing Director for the Western Balkans at the European External Action Service (EEAS), Marko Makovec, and is set to hold a meeting with Director-General of the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR), Gert Jan Koopman, as well as with Simon Mordue, the Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of the European Council Charles Michel.
