Lloga - Stirk: All stakeholders to be at their best in ensuring fair and democratic elections

Skopje, 4 April 2024 (MIA) - All stakeholders must be at their best in ensuring fair and democratic elections, agreed Justice Minister Krenar Lloga and OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission chief Jillian Stirk on Thursday.

Ambassador Stirk briefed Minister Lloga on the planned activities of the mission that is composed of 12 international experts, 20 long-term and 300 short-term observers, who will arrive in the country a day ahead of Election Day, the Ministry of Justice said in a press release.

Stirk said their experts will work on issues related to administration, political financing, campaign financing and media monitoring.

Lloga referred to the ministry's recent activities in ensuring a fair electoral process. These include the Electoral Code changes that incorporate a large portion of the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, as well as the safeguards in the Criminal Code through specific provisions related to crimes against elections and voting.

Hate speech and fake news remain a challenge for institutions during the election campaign.

"I am certain the legislation is sufficient for the country to hold fair and democratic elections. I expect institutions to be professional in addressing all challenges and tasks, resulting in a democratic electoral process of high standards. I urge all stakeholders to be at their best, because the elections are not the end of the world but a process that determines our future and our commitment to join the EU," said Minister Lloga.
