Spasovski in Washington: Congresswoman Tenney continues to support North Macedonia

Skopje, 10 January 2024 (MIA) – Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski, during his official visit to Washington, held talks Wednesday with Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on North Macedonia and Macedonian Americans.

As reported by the Interior Ministry, Spasovski and Tenney discussed the important role of the Congressional Caucus on North Macedonia, Americans of Macedonian origin, and the Macedonian-American community in the United States. In addition, Spasovski expressed thanks for the support and engagement in strengthening bilateral ties, promoting cultural exchange, and advocating for the interests of the Macedonian community in the United States.

“The Republic of North Macedonia aspires to a secure, stable, and prosperous future within the larger European family of the EU. Our efforts are largely focused on deepening democratic reforms, strengthening the rule of law, and continuing economic development. In all of this, the Macedonian-American community and the support from the US play a vital role. Our cooperation as NATO allies is based on shared values of democracy, human rights, and peace. We want to strengthen this cooperation through more bilateral initiatives, joint projects, and programs. In this regard, dialogue with representatives of the U.S. is of crucial importance,” emphasized Minister Spasovski, expressing gratitude for the personal commitment of Congresswoman Tenney.

He also thanked Tenney for her personal efforts in initiating North Macedonia's accession negotiations with the EU and for her commitment to the Congress resolution designating September as a month to promote and celebrate the Macedonian language, culture, and history among Americans of Macedonian descent, recognizing their centuries-long contribution to America.

“The Macedonian-American community has embraced the freedoms offered by American society and is integrated into various fields such as arts, science, business, politics, medicine, sports, and others. This is possible due to the opportunities for equal participation and contribution in building civil and religious freedoms and fundamental human rights. They became active members of the community, contributing to its development. Today, I am pleased to say that the Republic of North Macedonia is following this model, aiming to enhance a society where everyone deserves equal opportunities,” Spasovski said, expressing confidence that North Macedonia remains committed to advancing Euro-Atlantic integrations and strengthening institutions.

Minister Spasovski, on this occasion, requested support for the adoption of the Western Balkans Democracy and Prosperity Act. Additionally, he underscored that North Macedonia has no alternative but the EU and the deepening of the Strategic Dialogue between the Republic of North Macedonia and the United States.

Congresswoman Tenney expressed satisfaction with the opportunity to meet with Minister Spasovski and, on this occasion, emphasized her strong support, dedication, and closeness to the Macedonian-American community in the US, stating that she is always in search of a friend plus a Macedonian here in the US. Once again, she affirmed her support for the resolution designating September as a month to promote and celebrate the Macedonian language, culture, and history among Americans of Macedonian descent, acknowledging their centuries-long contribution to America.
