North Macedonia only country compliant with UNCAC Transparency Pledge

North Macedonia only country compliant with UNCAC Transparency Pledge

Skopje, 14 December 2023 (MIA) — North Macedonia is the only country out of 37 signatories to the United Nations Convention against Corruption Transparency Pledge to be fully compliant with its provisions at the moment, the government said in a press release.

This information, the government says, was released at the Conference of the States Parties, the main policymaking body of the UNCAC. The conference is taking place in Atlanta, GA, USA, with Deputy Prime Minister of Good Governance Slavica Grkovska representing North Macedonia.

According to the release, the UNCAC Transparency Pledge is a voluntary commitment to meet minimum standards of transparency and civil society participation in the UNCAC review mechanism.

Established in August 2006, the UNCAC Coalition is a global network of over 350 civil society organizations in over 100 countries, committed to promoting the ratification, implementation and monitoring of the UN Convention against Corruption.

"North Macedonia's complete compliance with the UNCAC Coalition pledge reflects the government's commitment to strengthening transparency as one of the most important principles of good governance," the release says, highlighting the importance of civil society taking part in the fight against corruption.

To maintain this progress, the release says, the government will continue promoting proactive institutional transparency through its new Transparency Strategy adopted last week at a government session.

The Transparency Strategy was developed in cooperation with civil society, the release adds. mr/
