Marichikj - Schütz: Germany remains committed to region, North Macedonia to focus on reforms
Skopje, 18 November 2022 (MIA) - The opening of North Macedonia's negotiations with the European Union is a significant step in the EU's enlargement policy with the Western Balkan countries, which is of strategic interest for both the region and Europe, said Director for South-East Europe, Turkey and EFTA States in the German Federal Foreign Office, Susanne Schütz, at Friday's meeting with Deputy PM for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj.
Schütz stressed that the integration of the Western Balkans in the EU and cooperation within the Berlin Process remain a priority for Germany in the coming period.
Interlocutors agreed that everything is in North Macedonia's hands now and it is necessary that the country remains committed to reforms and to fulfilling its obligations, as well as to properly make use of the positive atmosphere in the European institutions and among the member states.
"It is important for us to have the support of the EU member states. The beginning of the negotiations with the Union is a joint success. We opened a new page in the European integration process. Now it is most important to stay focused on the reforms and the negotiation process," Marichikj said.
Marichikj expressed gratitude for Germany's continuous support to the country and for the recognition and appreciation of the Government's work and commitment to the reforms, the Secretariat for European Affairs said in a press release.
Interlocutors also discussed the screening process, regional cooperation and the importance of proactivity of the Berlin Process. dk/nn/
