Marichikj: Cooperation with USA solid basis for fulfilling North Macedonia's EU agenda

Skopje, 11 February 2024 (MIA) — North Macedonia has signed a Strategic Dialogue with the United States of America and has ongoing cooperation; the US sanctions for corrupt politicians in the Western Balkans are especially important for the regional fight against corruption, First Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj told the panel "EU-US Relations: Building Collective Security in a Shifting World" held as part of the "The European Dream 2024: A Continent at the Crossroads" student-led conference at Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusets, on Feb. 9-10.

According to a press release from the Secretariat for Foreign Affairs, Marichikj said the USA–Western Balkans cooperation strategy was based on three principles of a clear agenda, strong support and constant presence.

He said the US Department of State corruption-related designations would help in reforming the country's legal system on the way to the EU. "Solving challenges such as corruption and promoting integration are essential for achieving this goal," Marichikj said.

The First Deputy PM said US politicians' support and engagement reinforced North Macedonia's commitment to democratic values and strengthened transatlantic partnerships.

"We are committed to encouraging regional cooperation through regular visits and dialogue," he said. "Strengthening partnerships within the Western Balkans and with NATO allies is of crucial importance for advancing common goals and dealing with common challenges."

He added that the upcoming European elections were likely to shape the future of Europe. He said it was important to promote the progressive perspectives of young people who stand for European unity and cooperation.

"The outcome of the European and local elections in the Western Balkans will have a great infuence on the region's future trajectory. These elections are key milestones in our collective journey toward stability and prosperity," Marichikj said.

The discussion focused on the geopolitical situation in Europe and the importance of creating a future of regional security and stability.

The other panelists were EU Ambassador-designate to the United States Jovita Neliupsiene and Arbroath Group founder Christopher Smart. The panel was moderated by European Council on Foreign Relations research director Jeremy Shapiro. mr/
