Brussels, 30 June 2022 (MIA) – The EU Council has welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s efforts after he voiced assurance that a good compromise agreement has been reached for Bulgaria and North Macedonia, MIA reports from Brussels.
Senior diplomatic sources have briefed journalists that “a final compromise has been put on the table, one that addresses the concerns expressed by both Bulgaria and North Macedonia.”
“If the proposal is accepted, it will ensure a breakthrough on which the EU has been working on for two years,” says the diplomatic source.
He adds that the EU welcomes the engagement of the French Presidency in reaching a mutually acceptable solution over the opening of the negotiations with North Macedonia.
If both sides accept the proposal, the Council can immediately adopt the negotiating framework for North Macedonia and Albania, followed by the first intergovernmental conferences.
“This proposal is a result of the active engagement in finding a mutually acceptable solution and addresses the concerns of both sides,” say the diplomats.
