Asked about error-ridden textbooks, education minister urges authors to be more careful

Skopje, 13 December 2023 (MIA) — Minister of Education and Science Jeton Shaqiri has urged textbook authors to be more careful and prevent mistakes such as those in the newest sixth-grade Mathematics textbook.

Minister Shaqiri also said he had recently asked the authors to explain the errors.

"I requested that official remarks be submitted by the university professors who were involved in the textboook preparation stating their reasons for the mistakes," Shaqiri told reporters Wednesday.

"All Mathematics textbooks, even back when we were students, contained errors," he said, assuring the public that the mistakes would be corrected.

Asked about the lack of foreign language textbooks, a problem that has dragged on for some time, the education minister said discussions on the Law on Textbooks were under way so foreign publishers could apply to the state's call for textbook authors.

He added he had asked the State Audit Office for an expert opinion as well.

"Pending their response, I want to be careful about the next steps," he said. "I guarantee you that after six years we will have a good definition of the law and I expect that the political parties will not make a problem so this can be resolved as soon as possible. mr/
