Xhaferi – Davidoiu: Romania supports North Macedonia's path to European integration

Skopje, 22 March 2023 (MIA) – North Macedonia's Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi held a meeting with Romania's Special Representative for the Western Balkans, Ambassador Adrian Davidoiu, whereat he emphasized the good and friendly relations between the two countries, thanking Romania for its overall support to the country's EU path.

Xhaferi highlighted the country's commitment and strategic goal to start EU negotiations after fulfilling obligations as part of the French Proposal.

He also spoke about the country's international agenda in terms of the OSCE Chairmenship as well as the processes within the Open Balkan initiative. He pointed to the importance of the Ohrid agreement between Belgrade and Pristina to normalize relations, highlighting that any mutually acceptable agreement between Belgrade and Pristina will be beneficial to the whole region, reads the press release.

Davidoiu said that Romania, as an EU and NATO member state, is deeply involved and interested in developments in the Western Balkans, pointing to the importance of strengthening cooperation between both parliaments.

“Davidoiu spoke about the current challenging time that Europe is facing due to the war in Ukraine and expressed strong support and belief that North Macedonia is a serious and loyal partner to NATO and the EU,” the press release reads.

In that context, Davidoiu is deeply convinced that the EU will value this and start negotiations with North Macedonia soon.

Xhaferi agreed with Davidoiu’s conclusions and once again expressed hope that the country will start EU negotiations soon. dk/nn/
