Von der Leyen to pay visit to North Macedonia, region Sept. 28-30
Brussels, 15 September 2021 (MIA) – Diplomatic sources have confirmed for MIA that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit North Macedonia at the end of September, MIA reports from Brussels. Von der Leyen announced on Wednesday morning that she’ll pay a visit to the Western Balkans by the end of the month to show support for the EU enlargement process in the region. The European Commission told MIA that she will travel to all six Western Balkan countries, including North Macedonia. The visit will take place September 28-30. According to MIA’s sources, the trip is still in the works and details on the program will be announced at a later date. Von der Leyen will travel to the region a week ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit, set to take place at the beginning of October in Brdo, Slovenia. The summit aims to reaffirm EU’s support for the region, as was the case with the summits in Sofia and Zagreb, held under the Bulgarian and Croatian EU presidencies respectively. “This summit is an important opportunity not only to reaffirm the European perspectives of the Western Balkans and their further integration, but also to provide additional encouragement for the implementation of the Economic and Investment Plan, which is in the focus of our efforts in the region,” EC representatives told MIA.
