Gashi - Kurtulmuş: North Macedonia an island of peace in Balkans, model of coexistence

Ankara, 3 October 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi met Thursday with Grand National Assembly Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş in the framework of the official visit to the Republic of Türkiye, and thanked him for the consistent and constructive support since the country's independence in the early 1990s.

Speakers Gashi and Kurtulmuş agreed that friendly relations are reflected in the rich parliamentary cooperation in bilateral and multilateral terms, the Parliament said in a press release.

Kurtulmuş expressed hope for further enhancement of excellent relations between the countries' parliaments, noting that North Macedonia is an island of peace in the Balkans and the best model of coexistence of various nations, religions and cultures.

Interlocutors highlighted that intensive political ties open room for enhanced economic cooperation, expressing commitment for rising trade exchange and investments.

The Parliament delegation, including several MPs, also met with the chair and members of the North Macedonia friendship group in the Grand National Assembly, reaffirming the significance of these groups in the strengthening of bilateral ties.

The meeting with the Constitutional Court president Kadir Özkaya focused on the structure, jurisdiction and international cooperation, as well as the meaningful collaboration with its Macedonian counterpart institution.

In addition, the Parliament delegation met with Selim Argun, Acting President of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, discussing its activities related to faith and the Islamic religion, as well as management of religious institutions.

The Macedonian lawmakers also laid wreaths at the Ataturk Mausoleum and the Assembly memorial for those killed during the 2016 coup attempt, reads the press release.
