Samkharadze: Observing to find out if elections carried out according to OSCE standards

Skopje, 8 May 2024 (MIA) — Observers are following the elections to see whether the voting is in accordance with OSCE standards, OSCE Special Coordinator Nikoloz Samkharadze told the press after visiting a Kiro Gligorov Elementary polling station.

Samkharadze said the monitoring was part of the joint mission of the OSCE/ODHR, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Besides observing polling stations in elementary schools in the center of Skopje, Samkharadze said, observers were also sent to monitor polling places around the country, including rural areas and every major city.

"We will have the preliminary conclusions about the elections tomorrow," the special coordinator said, adding that they would announce their findings at a press conference Thursday at 3 pm.

"We are hopeful that the elections will be calm, that the elections will be carried out according to OSCE standards, and we wish the people of North Macedonia lots of success in their future endeavors," he said.

Head of OSCE PA Delegation Carina Ödebrink said there were over 300 observers from the OSCE, and from the OSCE PA, another 56 observers from 25 countries.

"What is important on Election Day and the process after is that we collect all our observations and put them together. That's the important thing of our findings and statements," she said. mr/
