PM Zaev calls on progressive forces to vote in Sunday’s runoff
Skopje, 26 October 2021 (MIA) – My message to the progressives and the guardians of the values of one society for all is to vote in Sunday’s elections as they deem it is best for them, for their municipalities and our country as a whole, Prime Minister said Tuesday when asked whether he would step down if the SDSM candidate for mayor of Skopje lost the elections.
“I’ve been a fighter my whole life but I need the support of the people because local self-government units, the City of Skopje, which are crucial for the daily lives of people, will get more authorizations under the third stage of decentralization,” Zaev told a joint news conference alongside Finance Minister Fatmir Besimi, where they presented the 2022-2026 Accelerated Economic Growth Plan.
Asked to comment on VMRO-DPMNE’s allegations involving voter intimidation organized by police officers, Zaev cited the Interior Ministry’s statement. “There is no evidence proving a system organized by the Interior Ministry,” he said adding that an internal investigation has been launched to look into the claims after the opposition party at a news conference presented screenshots of Viber group chats to prove its accusations of voter intimidation.
Such allegations, the PM said, have no grounds because no political stakeholder has any need to do that.
“We are all winners if we have fair, free and democratic elections,” noted PM Zaev.
