Mucunski in Prilep: It is our duty to honour the heroic deeds of the defenders, ensure peaceful and stable future for citizens

Skopje, 8 August 2024 (MIA) -  Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski  laid Thursday flowers at the Karpalak memorial to mark the 23-year anniversary of the tragic incident when ten defenders were killed in an ambush near the Prilep village of Karpalak on Aug. 8, 2001.

"Addressing members of the families of the killed defenders and numerous delegations that paid their respects, Minister Mucunski expressed respect for Sasho, Nane, Branko, Marko, Erdovan, Ljube, Darko, Vebi, Goran and Pece, for their courage and sacrifice in the defence of the territorial integrity," the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Mucunski stressed that "the sacrifice of the heroes of Karpalak is a strong reminder to maintain and remain faithful to these values".

"The defenders paid the highest price in one of the most difficult moments for the Macedonian people, when our country was attacked and on the verge of an abyss. It is our duty to remember and honour their heroic deeds, while using all available mechanisms to ensure a peaceful, stable and secure future for the citizens," Mucunski pointed out.

He noted that their sacrifice "reminds us that we should always remain wise in making decisions, so that no one experiences a similar fate again."

"Just as the heroes of Karpalak stood up for the values and principles that define us as a nation, today it is our duty to face the challenges of the future with the same commitment, determination and wisdom. Heroes never die, but it is our responsibility to remember their sacrifice while making every important decision for the country," the Minister added.

He pointed out that the Government will continue to work "with full commitment to supporting the defenders and their families".

"We will uphold concrete projects and measures that will provide support and care for those who gave their all," Mucunski said at the Karpalak memorial in Prilep on Thursday.
