Monika Zajkova elected new LDP leader
Skopje, 20 November 2022 (MIA) – Monika Zajkova was elected on Sunday as new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) at the eighth party congress where she was the only candidate for leader. Zajkova, who was LDP’s Vice-President and is a member of parliament, succeeds Goran Milevski, who was the party’s leader since 2015.
After being elected at Sunday’s congress, Zajkova said LDP has continuity and has long existed on the political scene, adding that more visible policies, as well as concrete initiatives that will improve the daily life of the citizens can be expected during her mandate. “We don’t want populism and false promises about things that cannot be implemented, but small and clear initiatives that lead to concrete steps to improve life and conditions in the country,” said Zajkova. According to her, the country should be focused on progress and "step boldly towards continuing negotiations with the European Union, opening and closing chapters". “Major reforms are ahead of us, processes that may be long and will certainly cost us a lot, but will mean a better, more progressive European country, a better standard of living for all citizens,” the new LDP leader said. As regards the prospect of the Alliance for Albanians joining the government, in which LDP is also a coalition partner, Zajkova said she expects to be formally informed about it by the coalition partners, adding that "LDP is open to all progressive forces". “LDP will cooperate and form a coalition only if it is for the benefit of the country and the citizens,” Zajkova noted. Regarding amendments to the Constitution, she said the inclusion of the Bulgarians living in the country to the Constitution has never been an issue for LDP, but the party will also call for inclusion of the members of the Jewish community. “Since as liberals we have always fought for human rights and the right to self-determination for everyone, the inclusion of the Bulgarians in the Constitution has never been an issue for us, but we will also propose inclusion of the Jewish community as part of people who participated in the creation of the foundations of this country and participated in the National Liberation War,” said Zajkova.
