Mitreski: Parliament to take urgent steps for overcoming driving license problem

Skopje, 12 February 2024 (MIA) - The Parliament must undertake urgent steps in order to overcome the situation arising from the Prespa Agreement implementation, namely the problem related to the driving licenses, Parliament Speaker Jovan Mitreski told whips at a coordination meeting on Monday.

Speaker Mitreski said MP groups have announced they would submit various motions for law amendments, noting they should coordinate in reaching the fastest and best solution in the people's interest, and one not contrary to international agreements that are binding for the country, the Parliament said in a press release.

Mitreski said he would initiate meetings with the Ministers of Interior, Finance and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Insurance Supervision Agency over the issue during the day.

The Speaker also urged whips to inform lawmakers that he would schedule, if necessary, an urgent Parliament session over the course of the day.

The Ministry of Interior has said that the validity of citizens' passports and driving licenses with the name Republic of Macedonia will expire on Monday midnight, as per the deadline stipulated with the Prespa Agreement.
