Skopje, 22 November 2024 (MIA) – Albanian Alphabet Day this year comes at a time of heated debate that is causing unnecessary tension, First Deputy Prime Minister Izet Mexhiti told Friday's event at the Government on the occasion of November 22 – Albanian Alphabet Day. According to him, such debate has been encouraged to defocus public interest and create crises where there are none.

According to Mexhiti, instead of being an institution that should protect the rights and freedoms of citizens, the Constitutional Court has turned into an institution at which everyone "throws fire, anger, and arrows".

"No acquired or exercised right can be abolished or restricted, because if we want people to be treated equally in multiethnic societies, then it is our duty to ensure or guarantee the enjoyment and exercise of acquired rights and freedoms," said Mexhiti. 

He urged institutions to do their work in accordance with their competences.

"I expect the Constitutional Court to deal with aspects of human and civil rights and freedoms, and not to engage in political considerations on current issues, but remain an impartial arbiter and stay away from political influences when making decisions," Mexhiti said.
