Skopje, 3 May 2023 (MIA) – Justice Minister Krenar Lloga congratulated on Wednesday the World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3, to all journalists, cameramen, photo reporters, media and media workers.
"Journalists must work professionally and responsibly and be freed from all kinds of pressure. Free journalism is equal to quality journalism. Free and independent media are essential for promotion and protection of democracy in all segments of society. Citizens needs to have access to accurate, timely and reliable information. Only quality, responsible and ethical journalism can lead to the development of democracy, an inclusive and resilient society. I appeal to all of us to oppose the misinformation that aims to create a false image in society and panic among the citizens," Lloga said.
In order to improve the situation, the Ministry of Justice made it possible to guarantee freedom of expression through the legal amendments of Law on Civil Liability for Insult and Defamation. This law drastically reduces the fines imposed on media workers for damage caused by insult or defamation.
Under the amendments to the Criminal Code, an attack on a journalist or media worker will be treated as an attack on an official.
In the coming period, the government will also focus on improving the situation in this sphere, thus enabling independence and dignity of the journalistic profession.
