Kovachevski calls on opposition MP to put law on restrictive measures on Parliament's agenda

Skopje, 19 March 2024 (MIA) - In response to a reporter's question on the U.S. designations of former Special Chief Prosecutor Katica Janeva and current Karposh Mayor Stevcho Jakimovski for involvement in significant corruption, SDSM leader Dimitar Kovachevski said those were decisions of the U.S. institutions, adding that the Government had drafted a law on restrictive measures, but it is stuck in parliamentary procedure. He called on VMRO-DPMNE MP and chair of the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Antonio Miloshoski, to put the law on the Committee's agenda.

"Those are decisions of the U.S. institutions based on information they have. Given that the United States is our strategic partner, just as the EU and the United Nations, the Government has prepared a law on restrictive measures that has been forwarded to the Parliament. You have seen SDSM's statement, I can only reiterate that we call on MP Antonio Miloshoski and his VMRO-DPMNE party not to block the law and enable it to go through parliamentary procedure," SDSM leader Kovachevski said on Tuesday.

He said it was obvious that, for some reason, Miloshoski was blocking the law from being put on the Committee's agenda, and thus from being adopted.

"If they don't intend to put it on the agenda, then they should give the reasons why they are against passing the law in Parliament," said Kovachevski.

The U.S. Department of State announced on Monday the public designation of former Special Chief Prosecutor of North Macedonia, Katica Janeva; current mayor of Karpos, North Macedonia, Stevco Jakimovski; and former mayor of Kacanik, Kosovo, Xhabir Zharku. Their actions undermined the rule of law and the public’s faith in their respective governments’ democratic institutions and public processes.
