Skopje, 25 October 2024 (MIA) - We want to take this moment to honor the profound impact and vibrant culture that the Macedonian American community has brought to our nation. Last month was particularly special, as it commemorated the peaceful independence of the then-Republic of Macedonia from Yugoslavia on September 8, 1991-a remarkable achievement that embodies resilience and the enduring pursuit of freedom, says U.S. Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris in a letter addressed to the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD).
UMD has sent a questionnaire to the campaigns of former President Donald Trump and incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris including the relevant priorities for the Macedonian American community, such as declaring September a Macedonian American Heritage Month, strengthening of the strategic dialogue and partnership between the two countries, a potential double tax agreement and Macedonia's inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.
It is estimated that over half a million Macedonian Americans live in the United States.
UMD is a non-partisan, non-political and non-governmental organization, it does not and cannot support political candidates running for public office. As the leading voice of Macedonians in the United States, UMD educates policy creators on issues of interest for Macedonians, whereas answers are for information purposes only and do not represent any support or encouragement whatsoever for one or the other candidate.
The UMD is still waiting on a response from the Trump campaign and will make it public once received.

TO THE MACEDONIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY:
As we transition from September, a month dedicated to celebrating Macedonian American Heritage, we want to take this moment to honor the profound impact and vibrant culture that the Macedonian American community has brought to our nation. Last month was particularly special, as it commemorated the peaceful independence of the then-Republic of Macedonia from Yugoslavia on September 8, 1991-a remarkable achievement that embodies resilience and the enduring pursuit of freedom.
For over a century, Macedonian immigrants have sought refuge and opportunity in the United States, driven by pivotal historical events such as the Ilinden Uprising, the Balkan Wars, and the global conflicts of the 20th century. Since the 1880s, tens of thousands have found a new home here, contributing to the rich tapestry of our nation. Today, approximately 500,000 individuals of Macedonian heritage thrive in communities across the country.
The strong presence in states like Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania, and California speaks volumes about the lasting impact made. Macedonian Americans have excelled in diverse fields-whether in business, technology, the arts, or medicine. Entrepreneurs have invigorated our economy, athletes have brought home Olympic medals, and artists have enriched our cultural landscape, showcasing the incredible talents that stem from this community.
Beyond contributions to the economy and culture, Macedonian Americans actively engage in our democracy. Many have served in legislatures and civic organizations, embodying the principles of freedom and community that strengthen our nation. Their dedication to civic engagement is inspiring and crucial to the health of our democracy.
We celebrate not only Macedonians' remarkable achievements, but also the rich legacy that you continue to build. Let us come together to acknowledge the profound influence of Macedonian Americans in shaping the diverse spirit of the United States. Your contributions enhance our nation's strength and character, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
Warmly,
Vice President Kamala Harris
