Institute for Cultural Heritage of Albanians holds panel ahead of Ohrid Agreement’s anniversary
Skopje, 3 August 2021 (MIA) - The Institute for Spiritual and Cultural Heritage of Albanians and the Ministry of Political Systems and Inter-Community Relations organized Tuesday a panel titled “Skopje’s new Albanian addresses, a reflection of the spirit of the Ohrid Agreement” on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Ohrid Framework Agreement.
According to First Deputy Prime Minister Artan Grubi, the naming of a few streets is a tentative success, as well as many other successes bearing the seal of the Ohrid Agreement. He asked the Institute to treat the Ohrid Agreement like a cultural wealth and for there to be a detailed scientific study to compare “where we were and where we are today.”
“We need more days to realize all the activities leading up to August 13, when there will be an academy with our international friends such as Lord George Robertson, Javier Solana, Paul Williams, in attendance and we will reveal the author of the Ohrid Agreement to the public. He is an excellent friend of ours from the United States, as well as other friends of ours from the EU, US and OSCE,” said Grubi, who also serves as minister of political systems and inter-community relations.
Twenty years is not that long ago, he noted. “Stop and think for a moment, what you were like alongside us 20 years ago and today. We speak Albanian in the government and in Parliament. Yesterday, an Albanian folk dance and song were performed in the middle of Krushevo in honor of the Ilinden Uprising, and no one questioned this dignified display of Albanian culture,” Grubi said.
The director of the Institute for Spiritual and Cultural Heritage of Albanians in Skopje, Skender Asani, said that the naming of more than 150 streets, squares, and boulevards with Albanian names in Skopje in spirit of the Ohrid Agreement is one of the biggest achievements of Albanians in North Macedonia.
“The Ohrid Agreement is a historical cross section between centuries, and although it doesn’t fully fulfill the aspirations of the Albanian people through the centuries, it remains the first agreement where the international factor was mediator. It’s known that the Ottoman Empire lost its rule principles that it couldn’t be attacked by any other country, that it could only be destroyed from within after the Berlin Congress. The Ohrid Agreement did the same thing for North Macedonia, and the principle became that no country could attack it and it could only be destroyed from within,” Asani said.
Also, “Addresses of a Memory”, a book published by the Institute of Cultural and Spiritual Heritage of Albanians, was promoted at the event. dk/ba/
