Greek Orthodox Church declares satisfaction with decision of Ecumenical Patriarchate on Ohrid Archbishopric
Skopje, 8 June 2022 (MIA) – The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece expressed on Wednesday its satisfaction with the decisions of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate regarding the Ohrid Archbishopric. According to the statement, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece declares its satisfaction with the Letter of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew regarding the settlement of the schism that existed in 1967 and the restoration of the ecclesiastical communion with the Holy Ohrid Archbishopric, under Archbishop H.H. Stefan. In addition, regarding the Letter of the Patriarchate of Serbia, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece expresses serious objections and doubts mainly on the use of the term “Macedonian Orthodox Church”, as this touches upon internal affairs of the Church of Greece which also has under its jurisdiction an area called “Macedonia.” In addition, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece expresses serious objections and doubts on any granting of autocephaly by the Patriarchate of Serbia, since the only competent authority for granting autocephaly is the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Finally, the statement voices hope that “the Hierarchy of the Holy Archdiocese of Ohrid, under Archbishop Stephen, will make constructive use of its reintegration into ecclesiastical communion and the removal of the schism.”
