Speaking at Monday’s press conference to present this year’s festival program, director of the Ohrid Summer national institution, Natasha Popovikj, said art-lovers will have the opportunity to indulge in 36 concerts, nine theater plays and six additional events.
“From July 12 to August 20, the outdoor stage of the Ancient Theater, Dolni Saraj, the Cultural Center and the Church of Saint Sophia will welcome over 1,000 artists from 25 countries including Serbia, the Czech Republic, Lebanon, Italy, Slovenia, Poland, France, Albania, Argentina, Turkey, Israel, the United States, Hungary, Ukraine, Spain, Austria, Montenegro, Greece, Kosovo, the United Kingdom, Germany, Azerbaijan, China, Sweden, and of course artists from the Republic of North Macedonia,” Popovikj said.
She promised 40 enticing and exciting festival evenings with a rich program created by top Macedonian artists - Maestro Bisera Chadlovska, conductor at the National Opera and Ballet, and Sanja Arsovska, actress at the Drama Theater Skopje.
In addition to the opening night with the Italian Tenors, Chadlovska highlighted performances by the chamber orchestra Profundis, which is one of recently emerged Macedonian music ensembles, the world’s top violinist Stefan Milenković, violinist Shlomo Mintz, etc.
“On the birthday of Ohrid Summer, we’ll have the opportunity to see the flamenco ballet Luxuria, a spectacle based on traditional Spanish flamenco dances, and we will close this year’s festival with a very special event, dedicated to an exceptional man. I decided it would be a concert dedicated to the work of the legendary Macedonian composer Aleksandar Dzhambazov, who passed away this year. At the concert, Macedonian artists will be performing some of his most beautiful works,” said Chadlovska.
The rich theater program, according to actress Sanja Arsovska, is led by New York’s La MaMa with the epic co-production Balkan Bordello, Belgrade’s War and Peace and Uncle Vanya, Ukraine’s The Taming of the Shrew, as well as six exceptional home plays. The audience will have the opportunity to see ten theater performances, six local and four foreign.
Ohrid Summer director Popovikj expressed gratitude to all those who have been building the great work of the Ohrid Summer Festival over the years.
