Skopje, 21 March 2023 (MIA) – An escape tunnel was discovered in the Idrizovo penitentiary on Tuesday. The head of the Department for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions, Jovica Stojanovikj confirmed the reports for MIA.

“After receiving reports today together with the director of the penitentiary, Shpend Tahiri, activities were initiated to remove some buildings for greater security, and, in cooperation with other institutions, a tunnel has been found,” Stojanovikj told MIA.

The tunnel, according to Stojanovikj, is not within the area of the closed ward, which means it is impossible to be used for escape.

Activities began Tuesday morning and the relevant authorities are taking all necessary measures.

The tunnel is in the area of the penitentiary which houses prisoners who are serving long sentences. ad/nn/
