Skopje, 30 March 2025 (MIA) – Over 61 percent of respondents would vote in favour of Macedonia joining the EU in a referendum, shows an opinion poll, conducted by the Institute for Political Research (IPIS) after being commissioned by Detector TV program. 23.5 percent would vote against the country’s EU membership.
EU membership support is higher among Albanians, 77%. 55% of Macedonians have positive response, shows the poll.
However, the forecast of the citizens for the country’s full-fledged EU membership is not optimistic, it adds. One in three (29.6%) said the country will never join the EU. 20% of the respondents said they believe it could happen in the next five years. Only 26% of respondents said progress was made in reform implementation and in meeting European standards.
“Compared to the same poll last year, there is a significant decrease in the number of respondents saying the country isn’t making progress – from 41% in 2024 to 17% this year. One in two believe the opening of EU accession negotiations will provide a response to the challenges in key sectors, such as education, healthcare, judiciary, etc.,” says the press release.
The public opinion poll, conducted by IPIS from 1 March until 4 March, involved 1,050 respondents from all over the country.
