ELECTIONS 2024 / Ademi: Demand for President's election in parliament to remain during government formation process

Skopje, 27 February 2024 (MIA) - DUI vice-president and spokesperson Arbr Ademi said Tuesday the party's demand for election of the country's President in the Parliament would remain during the process of forming the next government.

"This demand will remain after the presidential runoff, after the parliamentary elections and during the government formation process. We believe this is a very progressive idea due to budget savings and in preventing the people's fatigue from the process of collecting signatures and election campaigns. Considering we are a parliamentary democracy, it would be logical to elect the President in the Parliament," said Ademi.

According to him, it is not progressive to claim that a state office is reserved only for one ethnic community, while not taking into account the quality required.

"Why wouldn't it be progressive that the President is elected in the Parliament, as is the case in other parliamentary democracies. A successful presidential election requires a lot of effort - census in both rounds of voting," said Ademi.

He added that the President's election in the Parliament would ensure societal consensus, since the MPs are elected by the citizens, whereas a Badinter majority would also secure an interethnic consensus.

"The legitimacy of a President elected in this way would be much higher than if elected by 41-42 percent of the total number of voters in the Electoral Roll," said Ademi.
