Bytyqi: Inflation sees downward trend, food prices to continue to drop

Skopje, 8 March 2023 (MIA) - Inflation has seen a dorward trend since October and we expect prices of milk and dairy products to drop in the coming period, says Deputy PM for Economic Affairs Fatmir Bytyqi.

"Economic trends point to activities that result in a falling inflation which is good news for all. Despite measures to support the economy and the citizens, the trend of rising prices unfortunately continued and we must put an end to this. The citizens' interest must come first. Therefore, we decided to freeze the price of the basic food product - the bread," Deputy PM Bytyqi told TV21.

He adds that another decision has been taken by the Government in this regard.

"We cancelled customs fees for pasta and other products that belong to the category of basic food products, which we believe will further contribute to a drop in the prices," says Bytyqi and adds that the price freeze policy will continue.

The Deputy PM expects prices of milk and dairy products to decease since some have been artificially increased.

"We cannot allow for immoral and unethical behavior by any stakeholder on the market and the citizen must be protected," says Bytyqi.

Regarding today's signing of the agreement on the construction of Corridors 8 and 10d, he says these are projects that will significantly change habits in building capital investments, especially those related to infrastructure.

"I am convinced that everything will be delivered within the prescribed deadline and we will use all the motorway sections by 2028, thus leading to stronger economic development," adds Bytyqi.

He says the agreement is a historic one because of the financial implications, since it represents 10 percent of the GDP, as well as the fact that 51 percent of the contractors must be domestic, meaning at least 1 percent of GDP growth.
