Albanian company suing North Macedonia, seeks USD 110 million in damages

Tirana, 23 August 2023 (MIA) — An Albanian company is suing North Macedonia though a dispute resolution center in Washington, seeking USD 110 million in damages, MIA's Tirana correspondent reports.

 

"The lawsuit involves the Amadeus Group S.A. owned by businessman Besim Elshani and Elisabeth Gjoni who were supposed to build a hotel and shopping center in Skopje. According to the lawsuit, the project got stalled so the company is seeking USD 110 in damages from North Macedonia," Shqiptarja.com informed on Wednesday, citing Oligarkia.al.

 

The same sources state that in 2014, North Macedonia's Government launched "an aggressive program to rebuild the capital in a classic baroque style to highlight the country's history."

 

The costs were estimated at more than EUR 650 million from the state's budget, and private companies were ordered to build in a baroque style.

 

That same year, the Albanian company Amadeus Group bought land in the center of Skopje though an agreement with the Government of North Macedonia to build a 16 meters high baroque style hotel. But both sides failed to realize the project due to disputes, the article reads.

 

In Albania, Amadeus Group owns the Amadeus Palace Hotel, near the so-called Rinas junction. There have been several attempts to turn the building into a hotel and casino but it has not been in use for years. ssh/mr
