"My warmest congratulations to Radmila Shekerinska, NATO's next Deputy Secretary General, and to Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and the Government of North Macedonia for championing her candidacy. A powerful testament to Shekerinska's expertise and experience, and North Macedonia's role as a valued NATO ally and U.S. partner," Aggeler posted on X.

Previously, SDSM leader Venko Filipche and former prime minister Dimitar Kovachevski also extended congratulations on Shekerinska's appointment.

Filipche pointed out that with her many years of experience, dedication and professionalism, Shekerinska will successfully cope with the biggest challenges ahead.

Kovachevski posted on Facebook that Shekerinska's appointment "is at the same time a great success for our country, and a confirmation of our important role in the NATO alliance."

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte decided to appoint Radmila Shekerinska as the next Deputy Secretary General.

“I am happy to announce the appointment of Radmila Shekerinska as the next Deputy Secretary General. She is a true believer in NATO, knows the work it takes to join the Alliance, and what it means to be a full member. I look forward to working with her as she takes up this vital role,” Rutte said in a statement posted on NATO’s website.

It said Shekerinska previously served as Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Defence of North Macedonia, including in the lead up to the country joining the NATO Alliance in 2020.
