US pauses tariffs on China for another 90 days

Washington, 12 August 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump on Monday said the United States will extend its pause on certain tariffs with China for another 90 days, until November 10.

"All other elements of the Agreement will remain the same," Trump said on Truth Social.

According to Trump's executive order, the United States "continues to have discussions" with China to address the "lack of trade reciprocity in our economic relationship and our resulting national and economic security concerns."

"Through these discussions, the PRC [People's Republic of China] continues to take significant steps toward remedying non-reciprocal trade arrangements and addressing the concerns of the United States relating to economic and national security matters," the order states.

Since April, the US has increased import tariffs on Chinese goods in several stages to up to 145%. China, unlike many other countries, responded with counter-tariffs of up to 125% and exerted pressure with export limits on certain materials.

In May, both sides agreed in Geneva to a 90-day suspension of new tariffs.

Delegations from the world's two largest economies then met in Stockholm in late July but failed to reach a breakthrough. After two days of talks, officials on both sides left open whether the tariff truce would be extended, with the pause originally set to expire on Tuesday.

A direct meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is seen as crucial for setting political direction beyond technical details.

Tensions between Washington and Beijing stretch beyond tariffs. China has also protested against US export controls on semiconductors and AI chips that it says block Chinese companies from accessing advanced technology. The US, meanwhile, accuses China of deliberately withholding certain raw materials.
