Tripunovski: Wheat yield almost sufficient for domestic needs, country not dependent on imports

Prilep, 13 September 2025 (MIA) - With over 280,000 tonnes of wheat from this year's yield, we almost meet the domestic needs and we will not be dependant on imports, said Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy Cvetan Tripunovski on Saturday.

Minister Tripunovski said the size of agriculture land under wheat has increased and the yield is sufficient for the domestic needs.

"The good quality of the wheat and the quantity we are trying to achieve will put Macedonia on its feet, and there is no need to depend on wheat imports from neighboring states or other countries. Our farmers will produce for our processing capacities. The same will happen in 2026," Tripunovski told reporters in Prilep.

According to him, the good quality of the wheat is acceptable for the milling industry, whereas commodity reserves also include domestic wheat.

"This means we will not depend on imports this year. We have made efforts to fill the commodity reserves with domestc wheat, and next year we will intervene in the harvest by regulating the purchase price," said Tripunovski.

He added certain modifications are planned in wheat production, in order to stabilize and increase it.

"We will talk to farmers about the 2026 programme, seeds and additional support, in order to maintain this strategic commodity, because it is very important and we have to maintain this level of production. The Government and the ministry are partners of the farmers and will continue to be," said Tripunovski.
