Skopje, 19 January 2025 (MIA) - Teodor Jovevski has retrieved the Holy Cross lowered into the Vardar as part of this year’s Epiphany celebration in Skopje.

Jovevski said it was his first time trying to get the cross, and he hopes retrieving it would bring him luck. 

The Macedonian Orthodox Church congratulated Jovevski, observing a traditional gift-giving custom. 

The Skopje celebrations began with an Epiphany liturgy led by Bishop Josif earlier this morning at the Nativity of Virgin Mary church. Bishop Josif then lowered the Holy Cross from the Sloboda Bridge into the Vardar as part of this year’s Great Theophany Blessing of Water Epiphany tradition for believers to retrieve.

Church officials told MIA that this year, over 220 citizens attempted to retrieve the cross in Vardar river. 

It is believed that the one who retrieves the cross will have a successful and prosperous year.
