IDF Diabetes Atlas: 140,800 people diagnosed with diabetes in the country last year

Skopje, 22 April 2025 (MIA) - Data from the most recent edition of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas show that 140,800 people in our country were diagnosed with diabetes in 2024, according to prevalence statistics for individuals aged 20 to 79. This represents a 7.4% age-standardized prevalence rate, as stated Tuesday by the Union of Associations of Persons with Diabetes of Macedonia.

“The new register on the status of diabetes in the world and Macedonia indicates a stabilization of the situation, with an annual increase of around 7,500 newly diagnosed cases of diabetes. These conditions indicate the commitment of patient associations in collaboration with health authorities and in partnership with the National Diabetes Commission and endocrinologists. There has been progress in stabilizing diabetes conditions, but predictions for a significant rise in numbers highlight the need for further actions, such as modern preventive programs, initiatives to secure innovative insulin and anti-diabetic therapies, education, and high-quality continuous diabetes management,” according to the union.

140,800 people in our country were diagnosed with diabetes in 2024, according to prevalence statistics for individuals aged 20 to 79. This represents a 7.4% age-standardized prevalence rate.

“The proportion of people with undiagnosed diabetes stands at 33.5%. The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes per 1,000 individuals is 47.2%. A noticeable decline in new diabetes diagnoses, as well as complications related to diabetes, has been observed following the implementation of treatment for each person with Type 1 diabetes and complications of Type 2 diabetes, in relation to the number of individuals, as well as cost savings in the healthcare system,” the union adds.
