Supreme Court President Ademi meets ECHR’s Spanó
Skopje, 4 November 2021 (MIA) - Róbert Spanó, President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) , visited Thursday the North Macedonia Supreme Court to meet with its president Besa Ademi.
The role of the Strasbourg-based court in protecting human rights and the commitment of the Supreme Court to providing efficient court protection of human liberties and rights was highlighted, the Supreme Court said in a press release posted on its website.
In an address delivered before the Supreme Court judges, President Ademi reaffirmed the European Court’s commitment to dialogue with national courts focused on providing protection of human rights and liberties.
“The Supreme Court is highly appreciative of the activities of the European Court of Human Rights aimed at improving the system for effective protection of human rights as well as the court’s functioning,” said Ademi.
“You are on the frontline in protecting the rights and liberties of our citizens,” Judge Spanó told Supreme Court judges in an address.
“The principles of the European Court of Human Rights should be applied in all courts by all judges, especially by supreme court judges,” he said adding that the cooperation of the Macedonian judicial system and the European Court of Human Rights is a reality.
The visiting judge also welcomed the reforms implemented in the judiciary. “Changes should aim at improving rule of law, which alongside democracy should be respected continuously,” Spanó said.
